MUSIC The Maui High School Music Department provides students the opportunity to expand their interest in music through preparation for public performances. We provide opportunities for the development of techniques needed to succeed in performance, as well as prepare students to embark on a rewarding career in the music field. Aside from the academic side, students will be involved in many social activities as well as promote school pride and spirit. Students in the music department have the distinct opportunity to take performance trips off-island and to the mainland. Career Examples: Composer, conductor, music critic, film music editor, music book/magazine editor, ethnomusicologist, instrument designer, instrument repairperson, instrument sales, professional performance, music librarian, performing arts administrator, music publisher, recording engineer, retail music sales, music teacher, music therapist, video music, vocalist Student Expectations: Students enrolled in the Music Performance program are expected to desire to expand your appreciation and knowledge of music. Students are also expected to commit to the ensemble as well as be open minded and willing to try new things. Students should also have and demonstrate school spirit. FMB2000 BAND 1 (Concert Band/Music Performance Core) Grade 9 1 credit each year (All incoming freshmen band students should enroll in Band 1) An intermediate-advanced band primarily for incoming freshmen in which students will acquire skills and knowledge to become successful contributors to the overall band program. FMB3000 BAND 2 FMB4000 BAND 3 FMB5000 BAND 4 Grades 10-12 1 credit each year An advanced band primarily for winds and percussion in which students will learn more technical aspects of music through public performance. FMD 1000 DIRECTED STUDY MUSIC 1 FMD 2000 DIRECTED STUDY MUSIC 2 FMD 3000 DIRECTED STUDY MUSIC 3 FMD 4000 DIRECTED STUDY MUSIC 4 (THIS IS A YEAR COURSE FOR THE MARCHING BAND AND THE PEP BAND) Grades 9-12 1 credit each year This course follows: Open to all band students, grades 9-12. The marching band course is designed for students who have already acquired instrumental playing skills and are drawn together by a common interest of learning the fundamentals of a marching band and wish to participate in public performance. FMC1000 CHORUS 1 Grade 9 1 credit each year Chorus 1 is designed for students to develop performance skills, knowledge, and understanding of vocal music. Musical arrangements from a variety of styles and periods are sung in unison and two-part harmony. Solo and ensemble singing are performed. FMC2000 CHORUS 2 FMC3000 CHORUS 3 FMC4000 CHORUS 4 Grades 10-12 1 credit each year An advanced chorus for students who have completed Chorus 1. |
