Program and Course Offering The health and medical services career academy is a challenging program of study that is designed to prepare high school students for post high school education, training, and employment in the health services industry. The curriculum addresses Hawaii State Pathway Standards of professionalism, communication, health care systems, safety practices, legal systems and ethics, technology, preventive care and education, and socioeconomic and cultural awareness/sensitivity. Student membership and participation in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), a national professional organization for students, professionals, and community members, provides cocurricular activities that emphasize the development of leadership and technical skill competencies though motivation, awareness, and recognition. Courses are academically rigorous, include hands on activities, and aim to connect students to the community. Career Examples: High School Diploma and Training: Massage therapist, dental assistant, certified nursing assistant, medical secretary, laboratory assistant, phlebotomist, pharmacy technician, medical transcriptionist, emergency medical technician. Two year degree: Paramedic, licensed practical nurse, acupuncturist, optical services technician, respiratory technologies, radiological technician. Four year degree or more: physician, chiropractor, pharmacist, athletic trainer, administrator, physical therapist, registered nurse, social worker, optometrist, nurse practitioner, biochemist, dietician, psychologist, veterinarian, dentist, audiologist, speech therapist, public health practitioner. Student Expectations: Students are expected to desire and pursue a career in the health/medical field. Other requirements include membership and participation in HOSA, purchase of pathway uniforms, community service participation, attendance at field trips and community activities, assignment completion and the creation of a personal portfolio. THC4010 HEALTH SERVICES CORE Grade 09 1 credit each year This is an introductory course designed for students who plan to pursue careers in the health services industry. Students will gain basic knowledge and skills about communication, organizational systems, ethics, safety practices, legal systems, preventive care, employment expectations, and cultural awareness in the health services. Students will learn to apply effective communication skills in dealing with patients and health care personnel. After successful completion of the Health Services Core, students can complete any of the following strands in the order printed. Students who complete Biology will be considered CTE Completers. THN4300 HEALTH SERVICES CAREER EXPLORATIONS Grade 10-11 1 credit each year This course follows: Health Services Core This course is designed as a second year course for students who are interested in pursuing a career in health care. It builds upon the foundation gained in Health Services Core through classroom activities and experiences in the school and local community. Emphasis is placed on transitioning the skill and knowledge base to application in the real world and project based learning. THU4024 THERAPEUTIC HEALTH SERVICE Grade 11 [Year 1 towards pathway completion] 1 credit each year This Course Follows: Health Services Career Explorations Health Occupations is an advanced course designed for students interested in pursuing health careers. This course will combine skills and information learned in pervious classes with work based learning experiences and community activities. These experience will result in a post-high school education and career selection consistent with the students, aptitudes , abilities and academic achievement. Membership and participation in HOSA is expected and provides a co-curricular framework for this course. THK4930 DIRECTED STUDY IN HEALTH SERVICES Grade 11-12 1 credit each year This Course Follows: Health Occupations; Instructor recommendation required prior to registering for this course. Please see Mrs. Nacua for more information. This course is designed for seniors who want to further explore an interest through individual research and development activities. Emphasis is focused on securing post-high school educational opportunities in health service and on the development of leadership and workplace skills through HOSA and an internship. This course may be taken concurrently with Health Services Career Pathway Capstone, Nurse’s Aide Training, and/or Medical Terminology. Health & Medical Services Capstone THK4990 HEALTH SERVICES CAREER PATHWAY CAPSTONE Grade 12 1 credit each year This Course Follows: Health Occupations, Instructor recommendation required prior to registering for this course. Please see Mrs. Nacua for information. A Capstone Project reflects the culmination of knowledge, skills, and attitude by senior students in the Health Services Career Pathway. This senior project provides a venue for seniors to plan and execute individualized study on a topic of particular interest to them. Participants will have their independent study and research periodically assessed by the instructor. Students are to enlist the guidance of an adult mentor from the school or community. The following products are required from the senior participating in a Capstone Project: 1) a research paper to demonstrate information and knowledge acquisition skills, 2) a formal oral report before a panel of industry experts, and 3) a portfolio that relates the “learning journey” and verifies the learning process. The topics of interest will be student driven and the choice of media for presentation will be at the discretion of the student presenter. Supplemental Courses Offered THN4200 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY Grade 11-12 1 credit each year This Course Follows: Health Services Career Exploration or Health Occupations, Concurrent enrollment allowed with Health Occupations, Directed Studies, Capstone, and/or Nurse's Aide Training This course presents a logical, step-by-step method of learning medical terminology through programmed instruction. Students interested in a health-related career will gain an understanding of the medical terminology that will enable them to communicate more effectively in the health care setting. Coursework covers prefixes, suffixes, and word roots; pronunciation, spelling, and definition of selected medical words dealing with all human body systems; commonly used abbreviations; and the use of the medical dictionary. This course focuses on language as a communication system. Medical terminology skills will be reinforced in other courses found in the Health Services Career Pathway. SLH7503 HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Grades 11-12 1 credit each year This course provides a basic study of human anatomy and physiology from cellular to multi systematic levels. Students learn about each system in the body by lab activities, inquiry and cooperative learning. Students learn to apply acquired knowledge in analysis, synthesis and evaluation of real world applications. Dissection of the fetal pig is required. |
